Giving Management

The Baylor Oral Health Foundation processes gifts on behalf of Texas A&M University College of Dentistry.

  • Gift Agreement

We provide gift agreements for all gifts and pledges of $25,000 or more. Agreements outline the purpose, form, schedule and administration of gifts. For smaller gifts, donors may document their preferences with notes on the check, pledge cards, online or cover letters.

  • Gift Conversion

Non-cash gifts (securities, real estate, and personal property) require special processing. The Foundation promptly converts these gifts to cash under guidelines specified in our current gift acceptance policy.

  • Specific Accounts

Each gift goes into an endowed or non-endowed, restricted or unrestricted account as specified by the donor. The Foundation disburses funds from these accounts as defined by donors’ preferences and the comprehensive operating agreement between the College of Dentistry and Baylor Oral Health Foundation.

  • Acknowledgements

The Foundation will furnish a letter of acknowledgement to provide donors with proof of tax deductibility.

Online gifts will be acknowledged by DonorBox for tax purposes and a letter of acknowledgement wil be sent to the donor from the Foundation.

  • Disbursement of Funds

If the gift to the Foundation is for a non-endowed fund, the entire gift is disbursed as designated by the donor and when requested by the College. If the gift is for an endowed fund, only the portion specified by the Foundation’s endowment distribution policy is distributed on behalf of or as directed by the College.

  • Confidentiality

Confidentiality of individual donor information and records is protected.

Current Gifts

Current gifts provide immediate benefits to Texas A&M University College of Dentistry

  • Cash Gifts

Cash in the form of personal checks or credit card (MasterCard or Visa) on DonorBox, is the simplest and most common type of charitable gift the Foundation receives. Cash gifts provide immediate benefits and may be designated as restricted or unrestricted. Checks should be made payable to Baylor Oral Health Foundation and mailed to 3600 Gaston Ave. Suite 1151, Dallas, TX 75246. The purpose of the gift should be indicated on the check, pledge form or in a cover letter. Cash gifts are generally deductible for taxpayers that itemize deductions. Please consult with your tax advisor for questions of deductibility for income tax purposes.

  • Securities

A transfer of securities (stocks or bonds) to the Baylor Oral Health Foundation allows you to make a gift and receive a charitable deduction equal to the full fair market value of the securities. Contributing securities that have appreciated in value can be more advantageous than gifts of cash.

The best method of transferring these assets to the Foundation depends on how they are held by the owner. The Foundation’s staff or brokerage consultant will work with you on the easiest method of transferring assets.

As with all gifts, if there are any questions regarding financial or tax consequences, please consult your tax or financial advisors before making the gift.

  • Real Estate

Real Estate qualifies as a current gift to the Baylor Oral Health Foundation.  Donors can sometimes benefit greatly by contributing assets instead of selling them.  As a current gift, the real estate donation provides the donor with a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift. The real estate gift must be appraised by an independent appraiser to determine the value of the property and the deduction.

All real estate gifts are first evaluated by the Foundation for acceptability and potential environmental concerns. The acceptance of all real estate gifts is at the discretion of the Foundation. If you are contemplating a gift of real estate, please contact Foundation staff so that they may help in the process.

  • Pledges

Pledges of cash or securities are welcomed and may be transferred over one to five years, at the donor’s convenience.

  • Matching Gifts

To encourage employers to make charitable contributions some companies agree to match personal donations with corporate contributions.  Rules about the types of gifts companies will match (cash, stock, property) vary among companies.  To initiate a matching gift, the company’s matching gift form it is sent along with the gift to the Baylor Oral Health Foundation.  The Foundation completes the form certifying that it has received the gift; and Texas A&M University College of Dentistry/Baylor Oral Health Foundation is eligible to receive matching gifts under your company’s guidelines.  BOHF forwards the form to the company, and after verifying the eligibility of the donor, the company provides a matching gift to the Foundation.

The donor should check with the company’s personnel department to see if their gift qualifies for a corporate match.

  • Planned Giving

Planned giving allows you to designate a future gift to the Baylor Oral Health Foundation in your estate plans, creating a legacy of support for our sole beneficiary, the Texas A&M University College of Dentistry and the next generation of dentists and hygienists.

A planned gift can be any size, from $1,000 to millions, and can be in the form of Cash, Real Estate, Appreciated Securities, Retirement Assets and Life Insurance.

With the help of an estate planning professional, your planned gift can be created through a will, trust or similar method and often presents benefits to you or your loved ones in addition to positively impacting the College of Dentistry.

  • Honorary & Memorial Gifts

A gift in memory or in honor of a faculty member, staff, student, relative or friend is a generous way to recognize a person’s life and accomplishments.

When an honorary or memorial gift is made, the Foundation notifys the honoree or next of kin, and the gift is administered as the contributor specifies. For an honorary gift, send a letter detailing the purpose of the gift as well as the name and address of the honoree should accompany the donation.

For memorial gifts, a letter should accompany the donation and list the honoree’s name and the name and address of the next of kin.

  • Conditions

All gifts are accepted subject to approval of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. If you have any concern as to the acceptability of a gift, please contact the Foundation for assistance. If there are any questions regarding financial or tax consequences, please consult your tax or financial advisors before making the gift.

Classifications

Gifts to the Baylor Oral Health Foundation can provide for many different opportunities at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry.

  • Unrestricted

Gifts without restrictions enable the College through the Foundation to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and to support projects and ideas not necessarily eligible for State funds. Unrestricted gifts may also support smaller projects that are innovative and worthy, but unlikely to attract contributions from other foundations or major donors. The use of unrestricted gifts is under the direction of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and the administration of the College.

  • Restricted

Donors may also want to address specific issues such as a current campaign, gifts for a specific department, or specific program. When the Foundation accepts gifts under restricted terms, the donor’s wishes will be followed as to the use of the contributed resources. In addition to endowments and quasi-endowments, the Foundation manages funds for many College departments, programs and projects.

  • Endowed Chairs

Endowments enable the College to compete for the best clinicians and researchers available. These gifts are strategic ways to build strength and quality into academic programs. Currently the Foundation manages several endowed chairs.

  • Endowed Professorships

These provide a competitive advantage in recruiting and retaining outstanding clinicians and researchers at a level below the department chair. As a consequence, they require a lower level of annual income and may be endowed for a smaller fixed amount.

  • Named Scholarship Funds

Named scholarship endowments require a minimum of $25,000 to yield adequate income to support a scholarship. Scholarship assistance is a recurring need for the College and endowments provide a perpetual and reliable source for meeting that need. The $25,000 minimum can be achieved by multiple gifts given over a five-year period. At present, the Foundation manages several scholarship funds.

  • Department And Program Endowments

These endowments provide additional income that departments can direct toward their areas of greatest need and opportunity.

Endowments

An endowment is a gift that is placed in a permanent fund.

  • How An Endowment Operates

In the case of an endowment, the donor’s gift is placed in a permanent fund. The Foundation only disburses the annual return from the fund for the purpose the donor designates. In this way, donors know that decades from now their endowments will provide similar benefits as they did when created. Endowment donors receive special recognition. They may name their endowments for themselves, family members, friends or their companies, subject to certain approvals by the College of Dentistry, Texas A&M University and BOHF.

  • How To Establish An Endowment

An endowment at the Baylor Oral Health Foundation requires a total gift of at least $100,000. You may fund your endowment over a period of up to five years, and multiple donors may contribute to the same endowment. You may designate your endowment to benefit a specific purpose, department, program or scholarship. The Foundation will provide a gift agreement to document the purpose, form, schedule and administration of your gift.

As with all gifts, if there are any questions regarding financial or tax consequences, your tax or financial advisors should be consulted before making the gift.
